A Deeper Look into SNAP Participants

The Census Bureau’s examination of the 2018 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) found that 92% of children who receive SNAP receive have at least one additional form of assistance.  Around 33% of these children with SNAP receive at least two additional forms of assistance.  Medicaid/Children’s Health Insurance Program was the most common companion benefit with an overlap rate of 89% (Census).   The report noted that more than one benefit is needed.  A review of the programs that assist this population of children reveals that, in most cases, the programs are designed to meet different aspects of human life.  The programs are:

  • Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
  • Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
  • Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Supplement Security Income (SSI)
  • Social Security (as a result of a parent being disabled or deceased)

Continuing to reach this population of parents with SNAP education and application assistance will allow children in low-income households’ access to healthy meals. More In My Basket (MIMB) aims to reach individuals who are likely-eligible and food insecure.   MIMB partners with County Extension Agents who provide SNAP education and program staff provide application assistance.
