Infused Water

With the summer months just around the corner, what better way to cool down than with a refreshing Fruit-Infused Water. Use your SNAP benefits to take advantage of the North Carolina in-season fruits and vegetables. For the month of May, strawberries and blueberries are two of the fruits, which are in season. For a complete list, check out the North Carolina Agriculture-What’s In Season chart.

Infused water is not only beautiful to look at, but it can give a sweet taste to a usually bland drink, making it more attractive to children.  Using your child’s favorite fruits is another way to generate interest. Get creative and use clear class cups or mason jars so you can see your fruits and vegetables in your drink. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different combinations. Make this a fun activity for the kids by decorating the mason jars/cups with unused craft items around the home.

A second way of getting creative is by making infused ice cubes. All you need is your fruit of choice, water, and an ice tray! There are so many ways to “test the waters” with infused drinks. Check out some of the fruit combinations you can try.

Directions:

  1. Simply chop fruit (an adult should be present if the child is young)
  2. Add the desired amount to your water
  3. Serve with or without ice

Keep in mind that the fruits and vegetables in these recipes are not intended to supplement your daily intake of fruits and vegetables. Check out the benefits of water consumption here.
