Eligible Food Items

Let’s talk eligible Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food items! Approved food items to purchase under SNAP include:
- Fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned)
- Meat, poultry, and fish (fresh, frozen, or canned)
- Dairy products
- Breads and cereals
- Other foods such as snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages; and
- Seeds and plants, which produce food for the household to eat.
That’s right, you can purchase all these items with your SNAP benefits. Don’t forget that purchases can be made in-store or online at participating retailers. The most common stores that accept SNAP benefits include grocery stores, supercenters, discount warehouse (such as Sam’s, BJ’s, and Costco), convenience stores, gas stations, and even some farmers’ markets.
Before you head out, keep in mind that alcoholic beverages, household products such as paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, pet food, and tobacco are not considered eligible food items.
