Homemade Gifts for the Holidays

The holiday season is about warmth, connection, and thoughtfulness—and you don’t need to break the bank to spread festive cheer. While store-bought presents can quickly strain your seasonal budget, homemade gifts can offer a high-value, deeply personal alternative. With a few simple pantry staples and a little creative packaging, you can craft thoughtful, elevated treats for everyone on your list at a fraction of retail cost.

Custom Hot Cocoa Mix

Cold winter days call for a warm mug, and a custom hot cocoa mix always hits the spot. Layered in a mason jar or tied up in a festive pouch, it is easy to assemble and simple to customize with dark chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, or crushed candy canes. Buying ingredients in bulk makes this an exceptionally budget-friendly option for large groups, teachers, or neighbors.

Here’s a recipe to get you started:

Ingredients

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 cups dried milk whole is preferred, but nonfat works
  • 1 ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch-processed preferred
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Transfer to an airtight container and store for up to 6 months.
  2. To make a mug of hot chocolate: combine ½ cup mix with ¾ cup of hot water or milk in a mug, stir well until frothy and well-combined.

Signature Spice Blends

For a savory or more versatile option, consider gifting your favorite spice mix. This can be an option for creativity but are fairly low-risk—start with quality spices and you’re already halfway there. Making spice mixes also helps control the amount of salt you use and saves you from paying more for seasonal premade blends at the store. You can jar up bulk batches to give as stocking stuffers or cook with them yourself to liven up your favorite recipes.

A pumpkin pie spice recipe is likely to be a hit during the holidays. You can use this one or any spice mix of your own:

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Add all the spices to a small mixing bowl or a clean, small glass jar.
  2. Use a small whisk or fork to mix well or secure the lid and shake the jar until completely combined.
  3. Keep the blend in an airtight container in a cool, dark cupboard for up to 3 years

SNAP during the holidays

SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and was formerly known as Food Stamps. In North Carolina, this program is called Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) and helps millions in the US stretch their own food budget.

To find out if you are eligible for SNAP or to apply for the program, go to ncdhhs.gov and search for “apply for SNAP.” You will find instructions for a 3-step application process, a link to a PDF of the application, and the phone number for the EBT Call Center.

Safety Tips

Like all homemade gifts, keep the risk for illness low by properly washing your hands before, during, and after assembling your gift. Provide a list of ingredients so the recipient is aware of any potential allergens. And if your gift requires cooking, provide instructions for proper preparation.

Thinking creatively this season will stretch your budget while delivering memorable, heartfelt gifts that your loved ones will truly appreciate.
